The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 state that any person working on the fabric of a building constructed before the year 2000 must have asbestos awareness training. This training must then be kept up to date with annual refresher asbestos training courses.
The dangers of asbestos are widely known – prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause four lung diseases: mesothelioma, a cancer which affects the lining of the lungs, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, which is a serious scarring condition of the lung and causes shortness of breath, and pleural thickening, where the lining of the lung (pleura) thickens and swells, causing shortness of breath. As an employer you are duty bound to ensure that all workers and contractors have the correct training for the job they are undertaking.
