Asbestos training courses

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 state that any person working on the fabric of a building constructed before the year 2000 must have asbestos awareness training. This training must then be kept up to date with annual refresher asbestos training courses.

The dangers of asbestos are widely known – prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause four lung diseases: mesothelioma, a cancer which affects the lining of the lungs, asbestos-related lung cancer, asbestosis, which is a serious scarring condition of the lung and causes shortness of breath, and pleural thickening, where the lining of the lung (pleura) thickens and swells, causing shortness of breath. What type of asbestos training is necessary?

Anyone likely to come into contact with asbestos as part of their working day must be trained so that they can recognise asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and know what to do if they come across them.  This is called Asbestos Awareness training.

Where an individual is going to be working with asbestos rather than just potentially coming into contact with it, then they must have more detailed and specific asbestos training.  There are two types of training for working with ACMs, depending on whether or not a licence is required from the HSE to perform the activity.  These are referred to as non-licensed or licensed asbestos activity and each has a different set of requirements for training.
